When people think of New York City, the first thing that comes to mind are the tall skyscrapers, the bright lights of Times Square, and people: lots and lots of people. In reality, the Big Apple that most of us think of is only a small portion of New York City and only one of the five boroughs that make up the city. With so much to do and see, here is a breakdown of what makes each borough worth your time to explore more.
Explore NYC’s 5 Boroughs
The Bronx
- Probably best known as the home of one of the most iconic sports teams in the history of sports, the New York Yankees, the Bronx has a lot to discover beyond baseball. Within this borough are two must-see stops only a half mile apart: the New York Botanical Gardens, with 250-acres containing over a million lush plants, and the world-renowned Bronx Zoo. For literary fans, smack dab in one of the busiest sections of the Bronx, is Edgar Allen Poe’s cottage where he penned the famous ‘Annabel Lee,’ ‘The Bells’, and ‘The Cask of Amontillado.’
Brooklyn
- Walk the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and spend some time in this borough, where you can find live music every night and pro hockey and basketball at the Barclays Center. There is always something to do in Brooklyn, including day trips to Coney Island and Prospect Park. If you like to shop for hidden treasures, the Brooklyn Flea is an outdoor bazaar with everything from vintage vinyl records to clothing from every era imaginable.
Manhattan
- Since Manhattan is the most covered borough for tourism in NYC, let’s talk about one of it’s neighborhoods, Harlem. Marked by its contributions to music, literature, dance, and art, Harlem has a rich history to explore today. Immerse yourself in art at Studio Museum and discover amazing restaurants such as Sylvia’s and Red Rooster. While there, be sure to catch a comedy show or musical performance at the iconic Apollo Theater and spend a night exploring the nightlife on “restaurant row.”
Queens
- The Queens borough is a world foods destination with plenty of international dining options as well as the open-air Queens Night Market (from spring to fall). There are acres of green spaces to frolic here and plan to spend time in the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, 9000-acres where more than 300 species of birds line the walking trails throughout.
Staten Island
- New York’s southernmost borough is renowned for its sheer number of museums, historic landmarks, beaches, and parkland. Staten Island is accessible by a free 25-minute ferry ride that offers an incredible view of New York Harbor, The Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. Be sure to visit Historic Richmond Town, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, and Greenbelt Park while there.
The energy of The City That Never Sleeps is more than just the bright lights and bustling tourist areas, so be sure to check out the unique offerings of each borough. After the rush of the holidays, it’s the perfect time to take a spring travel assignment in New York City.
