Samantha Evans, a senior recruiting director at Supplemental Health Care, has worked in healthcare recruitment for almost a decade. Healthcare recruiters work tirelessly in the background to find opportunities that match up with the skills, experience, and needs of their nurses and allied health professionals. For Samantha, she can’t imagine doing anything else.
“I heard about Supplemental Health Care from a friend, so I had to apply,” she explains when asked why she chose healthcare recruiting. “I am so glad I did. I have been here nine years and know I will be here another nine at least!”
Recently, her travel nurse, Arlene Higgins, nominated Samantha for SHC’s Care More Spotlight award. Arlene has had Samantha as her recruiter for more than six years and is proud to call her a friend. On National Healthcare Recruiter Day, Arlene posted the following message to Samantha on social media.
“Happy National Healthcare Recruiter Day to the VERY BEST recruiter ever and a person I call a friend. You always have my back and support me! I couldn’t do this job I love without your knowledge, skills, and friendship. Hope your day is the best!!”
In an industry based on caring for others, successful recruiters also need to show that same care for their healthcare staff. For Samantha, developing these connections with her nurses is what she loves most about her job.
“I have made some lifelong friends all over the country,” she says. “People who care not only about me, but my family too, and that feeling is mutual.”
Samantha also enjoys the challenges that healthcare recruiting presents. She takes a long-term approach to help her nurses plan their assignments. Not just the current assignment, but the next one, and the one after that. When searching for new job opportunities for her talent, she considers it to be a fun puzzle, especially when she finds a hidden gem that is a perfect match for someone.
Solving these types of assignment puzzles has contributed to Samantha’s lasting friendship with Arlene, who travels to travel nursing assignments with her husband in their RV. Samantha works together with Arlene to map out her 13-week assignments as far in advance as possible to eliminate multiple cross-country drives.
This summer, Arlene is working on a contract in Rochester, NY, only an hour or so from Samantha and the Buffalo office. After a few years of trying to work it out, they are both excited that Arlene is finally on an assignment close enough for them to visit each other.
But it almost didn’t happen. With the busy summer camping season in New York, there weren’t any available sites for Arlene and her RV. Fortunately, Samantha has family that owns a campground in the Rochester area, and they were able to make a spot available for her. Without that accommodation, Arlene likely wouldn’t have been able to accept the assignment. It is another Supplemental connection that fuels miracles!
“Over the years, we have become friends. Arlene has checked in on me during maternity leaves and even knitted my babies’ blankets. I always try to put myself in her shoes and make sure she is advocated for.”
We are so lucky to work with amazing recruiters and nurses at Supplemental Health Care and we’re grateful to hear about the wonderful connections they make along the way.
