Who would want to travel to Salem?

Salem, Massachusetts, is a charming New England coastal town best known for one of America’s darkest chapters: the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. During this brief period of hysteria, around 200 individuals, mostly women, were accused of witchcraft, and 19 were tragically executed. For centuries, the Salem Witch Trials have remained a subject of curiosity, intrigue, and mystery in American history and culture.

Today, however, this tragic history has helped shape Salem into a vibrant town filled with historical sites, museums, festivals, and a thriving arts and cultural scene. History buffs and enthusiasts of the supernatural alike flock to Salem year-round to immerse themselves in the town’s rich past. Every October, Salem celebrates its Haunted Happenings Festival in honor of its haunted history and all things autumn. The streets come alive with costumed revelers, haunted houses, ghost tours, and exhibits, drawing in thousands of visitors.

But there’s much more to Salem than its haunted past. The walkable downtown features coffee shops, boutiques, independent businesses, and local art galleries, and its coastal location provides easy access to beaches, hiking trails, and parks.

Located just 16 miles north of Boston, Salem offers the convenience of urban access without the high price tag of city living. For just $8, residents can hop on the commuter train and reach Boston in a 30-minute ride, making Salem a great option for those who want the best of both worlds.

Salem’s art and cultural scene are also major draws for residents. The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the U.S., houses an impressive collection of global art, maritime artifacts, and cultural objects. PEM's rotating exhibits, contemporary art installations, and public programs make it a cultural hub for residents and visitors alike. In addition, the city's local galleries and creative spaces contribute to its growing reputation as a center for the arts.

Whether exploring the local shops, engaging with the creative community, or relaxing by the ocean, Salem offers a unique lifestyle for those seeking history, culture, and charm in a small New England city.
