in Phoenix AZ

Travel to the Valley of the Sun — downtown Phoenix

Phoenix, known as "LA without the Pacific" is known for it's high-end shopping, a flourishing restaurant scene and resort life in the Sonoran Desert. Instead of golden beaches and palm trees, you'll encounter vibrant red mountains and cacti-lined boulevards. Phoenix's setting is so attractive that the one-time ranch town has morphed into the fifth most populated city in the U.S. And with the development of luxurious resorts, abundance of golf courses and energetic bar scene, it's no wonder why this city has become a popular refuge for snowbirds, families and 20-somethings alike.

The city and surrounding area is alive with events and attractions year-round. The Musical Instrument Museum, is home to a collection of more than 8,000 instruments from around the world. Travelers will find instruments, concert footage, clothing of renowned musicians and more. If you're more into history or art, the Heard Museum is one of the country's finest Native American museums filled with pre-Colombian art including traditional artifacts all the way through contemporary, conveying the life and culture of Native Americans in the Southwest. If you're more of a Modernist architecture person (think Frank Lloyd Wright) the Phoenix Art Museum is the largest art museum in the Southwest United States — from Diego Rivera to Frederic Remington, Georgia O'Keeffe to Frida Kahlo. And if the weather is too hot, the Arizona Science Center, is fun to explore — everything from electricity to weather patterns to outer space, sound, gravity and psychology, and more.

If you're not into the city life, no worries. "The Valley of the Sun," also provides those outdoorsy-types with a unique desert landscape and numerous hiking trails. Being seasonally mild through Spring, Winter and Fall, you can spend most of your time outdoors, hiking the mountains, photographing blooming cactus, playing tennis or soaking in the pool. South Mountain Park, Papago Park, Hole in the Rock are all natural wonders. And if you're into seeing a wider range of creatures, there's always the Phoenix Zoo!

Desert Botanical Garden is home to thousands of species of cacti, trees and flowers from all around the world. The garden's brightly colored plants sharply contrast the Sonoran Desert's cinnamon-red buttes, and numerous hiking trails.

Camelback Mountain is among the most scenic hiking spots in the city. Soaring more 2,700 feet in elevation, Camelback's summit offers spectacular views of Phoenix and Scottsdale and can be reached from the 2.5-mile (incredibly steep) out-and-back Echo Canyon Trail.
